Surface Chemistry

The Surface Chemistry Group encompasses two main areas: directed energy interactions with surfaces (DEIS) and the growth and characterization of nanostructured thin films (NTF). DEIS centers on understanding and using directed energy sources such as ion, laser, and electron beams to modify and probe surfaces. Several advanced methods for studying surface species, surface composition, and surface structure have been developed in our laboratory over the past several years. The NTF program is focused on the growth of diamond and oxide thin films using ion-beam sputter deposition and microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition, and the characterization of these films using time-of-flight ion scattering spectroscopies and synchrotron radiation techniques.
